Effective ways to protect yourself against mosquitoes

Mosquitoes can be a nuisance. Fortunately, there are ways to protect yourself from their bites – see what they are!

With summer comes various insects, including mosquitoes, which are a real nuisance. Not only are they a nuisance, buzzing over our heads, but the females attack us, drinking blood and leaving itchy blisters. How to deal with them?

What attracts mosquitoes?

Before we start looking for ways to repel mosquitoes, it is worth knowing – what attracts them. Well, these insects fly to us mainly because of the smell, and they are most attracted to our sweat that smells of ammonia and lactic acid. However, they also like our natural smell and increased body temperature. Therefore, in hot weather it is worth taking a shower more often, especially if you sweat a lot

In addition, it is worth avoiding physical exertion in the afternoon and evening, when the activity of these insects is the greatest. At this time it is also better to give up forest hikes and walks near lakes and bushes, where there are natural habitats of mosquitoes. Interestingly, they are also attracted to the smell of carbon dioxide, so it is recommended to refrain from drinking carbonated beverages.

Plants that repel mosquitoes

Some plants are effective in repelling mosquitoes, such as catnip, which contains nepetalactone – an essential oil whose scent repels these insects. The so called ‘anginka’, i.e. sweet woodruff, and the mosquito plant, expertly called plectrantus coleus, are also helpful. Popular herbs such as mint and basil also protect against mosquitoes.

Essential oils

To avoid mosquito bites, it is also a good idea to use essential oils. This is a natural and safe way to avoid an encounter with these insects. Which ones to use? The best oils are: almond, vanilla, cinnamon, coconut, lemon, pine and eucalyptus. Valerian and orange flower extract can also be used. An effective method is to make a homemade areosol that is a combination of several oils. Just mix them with vodka and spray them on your body before going outside.

Onions and vinegar will repel insects

A good mosquito repellent is onions and vinegar. Just cut up onion and put it on a plate, which you put by the bed or by an open window. Its strong smell will prevent mosquitoes from approaching us. Vinegar works the same way (preferably from walnut leaves), in this case it is worth soaking a cloth or sponge in vinegar and put it e.g. on a windowsill.

Turpentine

Turpentine is a colorless liquid with a characteristic, strong smell. It is usually used as a solvent for paints or varnishes. If you have a lot of mosquitoes in your apartment and want to get rid of them, just pour turpentine into a bowl and leave it in a closed room for about 20-30 minutes. Make sure that no one (neither human nor animal) stays in the room. After this time, mosquitoes should lie on the floor. It is enough to sweep and remove them. After such “treatment” it is also necessary to thoroughly ventilate the apartment.

Mosquito nets in windows

If you want to have open windows, but can not cope with mosquitoes – the best method will be to install mosquito nets. They are very thin, often hardly noticeable, but they effectively prevent insects from getting into our house. They can be fixed permanently or glued.
