How to design a comfortable and functional room for a student?

Designing a comfortable and functional room for a student is a difficult task, because it must include three zones: study, relaxation, play.

Multifunctionality of the student’s room

The student’s room is one of the most multifunctional rooms in the entire house – it is also often the smallest room. This situation is caused by a misconception that the child is the smallest member of the family and does not need much space – nothing more misleading. A child’s own room is a place for playing, learning and sleeping. That is why it is so important to designate, even in a small space, appropriate zones:

  • sleeping,
  • storage,
  • play/rest,
  • study.

Study area the most important zone in a student’s room

The study area is mainly:

  • desk,
  • chair,
  • a lamp.

If the child is right-handed, the desk should be on the left-hand side of the room. Conversely, if your child is left-handed, his/her desk should be on the right-hand side. The study desk should not be situated opposite the window as the sunlight will reflect off the monitor, e.g. the computer, which will make learning much more difficult.

What kind of desk is the ideal one?

When choosing a desk for a student, you should choose a piece of furniture that has:

  • depth 60-90 cm, width at least 120 cm;
  • a pull-out drawer with an organizer under the desk;
  • a height matched to the student’s height – it is best if it is possible to adjust it;
  • drawers to help keep things tidy.

Ergonomic chair

For a student’s room you should choose a chair which is adjustable:

  • height,
  • seat depth,
  • backrest.

An ergonomic chair is very important because a bad seat can lead to major postural defects.

Lamp

Every student’s desk should not lack a lamp, which provides adequate lighting. The size of the lamp should be tailored to individual needs. The lamp for right-handed children should be on the left side and vice versa.

Place for rest and play

In a room for younger students, there should be a place to play – a colorful rug is best for this. For older students, it is worth organizing a corner in the room to receive friends, where there are comfortable pouffes and a table.

A place to sleep

To ensure a peaceful sleep for your child, you should place the bed away from the window and the door. The best choice is to buy an extendable bed that grows with your child, so it can serve longer. In a small room, a bunk bed that can have a play area underneath it or a desk with cabinets will work best.

Place for storage

The storage area can not miss a chest of drawers or a large closet, which should be located near the bed, so that the child has easy and quick access to clothes.

Cabinets and bookcases should accommodate all the necessary children’s accessories. If there is not enough space for storage, it can be irreplaceable:

  • crates,
  • pouffes,
  • hanging shelves.

Illumination of the student’s room

In the student’s room is recommended central lighting, you can choose from:

  • ceiling pendant lamp,
  • plafond,
  • lights hidden in the ceiling,
  • spotlights on rails.

Another source of light is a bedside lamp located next to the bed. When choosing light bulbs for a child’s room, check the color temperature. For bedside lamps, bulbs with a color of 500-2700 K are recommended, while cool colors from 5600 K help to focus.
