Can you eat raw meat while pregnant?

Until recently, the diet of a pregnant woman was very strict. Currently, doctors no longer recommend an elimination diet for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. However, the future mother should remember that food has a huge impact on the health of the baby, so it is worth giving up many products that can be a source of dangerous bacteria.

Products prohibited during pregnancy

Pregnant women have various taste cravings that must be taken into account in their diet. Unfortunately, not all food products available in stores are safe for a pregnant woman. Foods that are dangerous for pregnant women include:

  • meat,
  • caviar,
  • unpasteurized milk products,
  • certain types of fish,
  • liver,
  • eggs.

It is worth eliminating from the pregnant woman’s diet those products that can cause an infection with dangerous bacteria. This type of infection is most often manifested by vomiting, which can lead to dehydration.

Pregnant women do not have to give up their favourite foods in order to avoid infection. It is enough to prepare meat in an appropriate way – it needs to be fried, boiled or roasted. In this way, a pregnant woman can avoid toxoplasmosis, the symptoms of which are:

  • fever,
  • flu-like symptoms,
  • swollen lymph nodes,
  • encephalitis and meningitis,
  • muscle and joint pain.

Raw or semi-cured (undercooked, undercooked, underdone) meat can be a source of infection with dangerous bacteria:

  • Listeria mococytogenes – causing Listeriosis,
  • Toxoplasmosis gondii – causing Toxoplasmosis,
  • Salmonella – causing Salmonellosis,
  • Campylobacter jejuni – causing Campylobacteriosis.

The bacterium that causes Listeriza, is found in:

  • meat,
  • smoked fish,
  • raw, dried ham such as Parma ham,
  • cold cuts and sausages that have not been produced at high temperatures.

Raw eggs and shells may contain the bacterium that causes Salmonellosis. Therefore, a pregnant woman should exclude from her diet all dishes that contain raw eggs such as:

  • mayonnaise,
  • mayonnaise, cogel-mogel,
  • desserts with raw eggs,
  • cakes with raw egg yolks as an ingredient.

Other products prohibited for pregnant women

Many products can have a negative effect on the developing fetus. Therefore, it is worthwhile for a pregnant woman, in addition to raw and semi-raw meat and eggs, not to consume other prohibited products.

Products made from unpasteurized milk

Bacteria dangerous for pregnant women are found in products from unpasteurized milk. They can contribute to poisoning:

  • Listeriosis,
  • Sallmonellosis,
  • Campylobacetriosis.

All dairy products consumed by a pregnant woman must be made exclusively from pasteurized milk (heat treatment destroys the above bacteria). A pregnant woman should not consume:

  • mouldy cheeses such as brie, camembert,
  • blue-veined cheeses such as gorgonzola,
  • feta cheese,
  • drink unpasteurized milk.

Fresh and smoked fish

Fish are an important part of a pregnant woman’s diet, as they contain a lot of Omega-3 fatty acids and minerals. Unfortunately, not all fish are recommended for pregnant women. During this time, a woman should not consume:

  • raw fish like shushi, sumi,
  • raw seafood,
  • smoked fish,
  • Marlin,
  • Swordfish,
  • Shark,
  • Tuna,
  • Butterfish,
  • Eel,
  • Flipper,
  • Perch.

Liver only in small quantities

At this time it is advisable to eat liver, but only in small quantities. All because of the high content of vitamin A, which is found in liver. The consumption of too much of this vitamin can lead to malformations in the baby, e.g:

  • hydrocephalus,
  • microcephaly,
  • growth defects,
  • malformations of the face and heart.

Vitamin A consumed in adequate amounts has a positive effect on the skin, eyes, immune system. This vitamin is found in dairy products, liver, fish, broccoli, among others.

Herbs not always appropriate?

Herbs are usually considered helpful, but a pregnant woman should avoid those herbs that may be particularly dangerous for her. These include, for example

  • Fenugreek,
  • Scratchwort,
  • Rutwort,
  • Wild asparagus,
  • Milk Thistle.

The herbs listed above can harm a pregnant woman’s health by causing:

  • nausea,
  • diarrhea,
  • vomiting,
  • headaches,
  • insomnia,
  • nervousness.

A pregnant woman concerned about her own and her baby’s health should give up certain products at this time.
