Teething – how to survive this difficult time?

Smooth teething is every parent’s dream. However, cutting teeth very painfully pierce through the gums, causing the child various disorders. Fortunately, there are ways to survive this difficult time.

Long teething process

Teething in a baby is a staggered process. Teeth eruption usually begins between 4 and 6 months of age, and can continue until your baby is 36 months old. After this time, there will be 20 baby teeth in your baby’s mouth.

Teething discomfort

In some children, the teething process goes almost unnoticed – the discomfort is small and does not cause discomfort to the child. Unfortunately, such cases are few. Most often, however, teething is a nuisance for the child, which translates into his behavior.

Most toddlers who have their teeth erupting behave differently than usual. Children are grouchy, crying, drooling a lot and often put their hands or toys in their mouths. A child’s erupting teeth may also cause a number of other symptoms, including

  • fever,
  • cough,
  • runny nose,
  • diarrhea.

A toddler with erupting teeth may also have a smaller appetite or will clench his gums on the bottle or breast while eating. This behavior is caused by itchy gums, which are swollen and red during teething – this condition can last for several months.

The symptoms of teething can get worse when the baby has more than one tooth at a time – fortunately, such situations are extremely rare. Most children tolerate the eruption of subsequent teeth much better – it is usually less painful for the child.

How can you help your child during teething?

The most painful for babies is in the final stage of teething, when the tooth breaks through the gum. The child will then feel discomfort, itching and very often pain. In this situation, the child may not want to eat and may also experience other symptoms, such as fever or runny nose. In this case, it is worth reaching for methods that will help the child survive the difficult teething period.

Teether

Many experienced moms recommend teethers for teething babies, which provide relief when chewed. The teethers help the baby’s teeth to erupt by applying pressure to the gums. Chews with teethers that massage sore gums are often recommended.

There are different types of teethers on sale, the most popular models are the ones with a rattle, rattle, rattle, rattle, rattle, rattle, rattle, rattle, rattle, etc:

  • with a rattle,
  • gel,
  • filled with water,
  • wooden.

Baby should have different types of teethers – after all, you never know which one will suit your baby best. Teeth filled with water can be cooled in the refrigerator before serving – chewing on a cool object will provide the toddler with relief from more severe pain. Keep in mind, however, that such teethers must not be cooled in the freezer! A frozen teether can damage the delicate mucous membrane in your baby’s mouth!

Teats withnipples are a novelty on the market. The nipple’s nubs gently massage sore gums, reducing discomfort.

Gum massage

Gum massage by the parent will also provide relief during teething. The massage can be done in two ways:

  • with a washed index finger – it is a good idea to keep the nails cut short for this activity,
  • using a rubber brush placed on the finger.

Teething help from the pharmacy

Ailments of the toddler during teething can be alleviated by using appropriate preparations. Ointments and gels for teething can be purchased in pharmacies without a prescription. Such preparations have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. The most popular include:

  • Camile,
  • Dentinox,
  • Bobodent,
  • Anaftin baby,
  • Viburgel.

When using teething preparations, the parent should strictly adhere to the dosage recommended by the manufacturer. In case of severe pain, it is recommended, after consultation with the pediatrician, to give the baby painkillers (in syrup or suppository).

Teething is a very demanding stage for both the child and its parents. That’s why it is so important to provide adequate support for the toddler during this time.
